The marvellous thing about ABC is that you can download 100s of tunes in a very short time (seconds) as they are produced in ASCII format. You then use your soundcard to manipulate the music when you play it back. The music can then be played and / or printed.

Click here for the ABC homepage

.
 the site is very self-explanatory.

The software we load for playing the ABC tunes is:
abcmus Download this and you will have a powerful tool which will play back the ABC files. If you have a good sound card fitted you will have the full range of sound outputs to choose from. It has other clever features including the ability to add chords to the music it plays + lots of fun extras .It will also help you to organise the ABC files. Finally it's free!!
And for seeing the tunes on a musical stave we use:
abc2win

This program lets you print out the music (you have to fiddle with copy & paste). It is an excellent companion to abcmus.

They estimate there are around 10000 tunes on this same site - We had to set up a folder to hold all the tunes with sub folders for French, Irish etc. the abcmus software has a great search facility.

Have fun and let us know how you get on.
